_____ Space.
_____ Space. A thesis project completed for MFA at San Diego State University.
The premise was an exploratory attempt to determine if, with minimal suggestion, individuals would utilize abstracted space in traditional ways. Two types of forms were created: one linear and one with curves. The physical sculpture was filmed in two different areas: The Love Library and The University Gallery, both located on the San Diego State University campus. The digital curvilinear environment was hypothetical, designed to be a counterbalance to the linear sculpture.

Linear Pod
Linear Pod placed in the Love Library at SDSU.

In-Process Drawing
Drawing created in Rhino to help determine final shape and proportions of Linear Pod.

Back View of Linear Pod
View from the back of the sculpture. Box on bottom right is removable.

Close-Up of Open Area
Area within the Linear Pod sculpture that invites two individuals to sit and converse.

Proposed Downtown Communication-Focused Environments
A birds-eye view of exploratory linear environments that are meant to encourage communication. The size and layout of these environments were created based on the knowledge gathered from the built sculpture. These sculptures have various seating capacities and are designed to encourage people to sit and relax in this area. The larger, long-term idea is that these could possibly be adjusted further to be used for a commercial purpose, such as an outside cafe.

Side View of Linear Pod
Heights of frames vary from 5’-0” H to 8’-0” H. Interior step heights range from 1” to 1’-0”.
Series of Stills from Short Animation
Images show how the curvilinear environment moves. In this design the rings can be adjusted by the end user to either have an open design if the rings are pushed to one side or be more private if they are staggered.

Proposed Solitary Environments
A birds-eye view of exploratory environments that are meant to be placed in downtown San Diego, using iterations of the curvilinear form. These sculptures are full size, and intended for humans to move through. The adjustable curves and proportions of the circles were created to encourage usage that is more solitary.

Series of Advancement Proposals
Set of boards presented for Advancement in the fall of 2016. These sets of ideas were the precursors to the final thesis show. The following boards examined multiple types of abstract environments that could potentially be constructed and placed into the University Gallery. The final thesis show utilized two main designs from these brainstorms (redesigned a bit from original ideas).
